Course Description: Looking for a writing class that’s actually fun? This year-long elective for 8th–11th graders gives students the chance to explore many different styles of writing—from creative storytelling to real-world writing they’ll actually use. Students will write narratives, persuasive and expository essays, compare-and-contrast pieces, book blurbs, movie reviews, poetry, and more. One of the most popular units is the Food Critic / Restaurant Review, where students get to visit a restaurant and write an honest, professional-style review.
This class also focuses on real-world writing skills, like how to write effective emails to teachers or other adults, create Amazon-style product reviews, send fan mail to a celebrity, and even ask for a letter of recommendation. For students who love creativity, there are exciting projects such as a Pixar-inspired short story, a choice between writing a whimsical fairy tale or designing a graphic novel (comic strip), and trying out news-style writing. Students will also learn how to research a topic and write a strong argumentative essay that convinces readers to see their point of view—while learning how to properly cite sources using in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
Students entering this class should already be able to write a solid paragraph and be ready to grow as confident, creative, and skilled writers.
