Course Description: English IV is a challenging yet enriching course designed to engage students in the careful and deliberate reading for multiple levels of meaning. The goal of this course is to ensure that every student can enter the college classroom with confidence as a critical reader and masterful writer. English IV presents a variety of genres and authors within English literature, giving special attention to major British writers and poets. Students will study texts in regards their historical, linguistic, and cultural contexts. The class will focus on an interactive approach to the study of literature - introducing and incorporating literary theory, along with advanced annotation techniques, research, argumentation, and rhetorical analysis. Creating original work that showcases deep thinking and synthesis is a major component of this course. While the bulk of student writing will be critical analysis, creative assignments will be given so students can use and practice the literary elements studied. Grammar will be refined as students work their way through each text and corresponding assignment. Students will also continue to increase their vocabulary by studying each new text and by reviewing English derivatives from Latin and Greek root words.
This course counts as 1 of the 4 English credits needed for a high school transcript to be eligible for graduation in the state of Texas.
